The Problem:

Large corporations are the great empires of the 21st century: by controlling the production, commercialization and distribution of all kinds of goods necessary for life, they achieve income levels greater than the GDP of many states.

The objective of large corporations is to maximize their profits at the expense of the repeated violation of human rights and the environment. The devastating expansion of the economic power of transnational corporations would not have been possible without the support of states, which demonstrates the political power they hold. Moreover, the legal power they enjoy allows them to act with a high level of impunity. The final pillar needed to entrench corporate power is the media, since companies have enormous influence and capacity for persuasion over societies.

In the current system, multinational companies increase their profits exponentially, even taking advantage of situations of systemic crisis to accelerate profit-making and increase their power. The logic of infinite profit, as well as the belief that everything is marketable, entails the destruction of people’s rights and of the environment, as well as of democracy itself.

The Solution:

Corporate power is sustained by a complex framework that makes up the legal-political architecture. It is necessary, on the one hand, to urgently establish control mechanisms through norms and rules that require respect for human rights. On the other hand, it is necessary to reclaim the public space occupied by transnational corporations, building a framework for exchange and the creation of alliances between communities and social movements. Putting an end to the impunity of corporate power and asserting the sovereignty of peoples requires achieving the following objectives:

  1. Completely dismantle the international architecture that favors lex mercatoria and large transnational corporations, and prevent the signing of new free trade agreements.
  2. Prioritize human rights over trade and investment rules.
  3. Promote international trade based on food sovereignty, democratic control and the primacy of rights over profits.
  4. Protect the commons, excluding the private sector from areas necessary for sustaining life.
  5. Develop binding treaties that oblige states to protect human rights and the environment above economic benefits.
  6. Implement effective control and sanctioning mechanisms for transnational corporations.
  7. Hold transnational corporations responsible for the entire chain of activities associated with their economic benefit.
  8. Develop effective mechanisms for reparation of the harmful and damaging activities of transnational corporations on peoples, people and the environment.
  9. Develop effective mechanisms that break the state-corporation tandem (revolving doors, tax havens, corruption…).
  10. Establish a system of exhaustive control over transnational corporations by improving national systems.
  11. Public control of transnational corporations
